The graduate pipeline
Mine Mentor
Comodex’s graduate readiness engine — one pipeline that takes a mining student from the university lecture hall to a productive, certified professional.
Why it exists
Universities produce highly capable graduates in mining engineering, geology, metallurgy, surveying and the engineering disciplines. What most of them have not had is the chance to apply that knowledge repeatedly, in a practical environment, before someone employs them.
That is not a failure of the universities, and it is not the fault of the industry. Mining companies exist to mine safely and profitably; universities exist to educate; training providers exist to develop people who are already employed. Practical development therefore falls to vacation work, which is invaluable but limited by production schedules, safety rules, medical compliance and supervisory capacity.
Mine Mentor is the bridge across that gap — and the umbrella under which our placement work, the MMEP and the proposed national training facility connect.
Three parts, one pipeline
How it fits together
01
Placement
Sourcing, assessment and readiness-certification of graduates and artisans, placed into your operation. Charged as a once-off fee per placement.
02
The MMEP
A 12-month, outcome-based development journey for final-year students and recent graduates, run in partnership with the mining departments at the University of Johannesburg, the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Pretoria.
03
The training facility
A proposed national facility dedicated to developing students throughout their academic journey, rather than only during vacation work.
Mine Mentor Exchange Programme (MMEP)
Twelve months, outcome-based, designed to bridge university learning and real mining practice. It blends technical competence, behavioural growth and workplace readiness into one experience, and it addresses the exact gaps companies report: workplace readiness, applied competence and sustained development.
It is not a tick-box course. Delegates who meet the threshold leave with a Certificate of Competence that means something to the panel that awarded it.
What the programme includes
Technical foundations and exposure
Rotations across geology, planning, mining methods, safety, engineering support, processing and environmental management, supported by site visits, underground practicals and supplier demonstrations.
Soft skills and leadership
Structured modules on communication, teamwork, problem-solving, professional conduct and supervisory essentials, including Equine Assisted Learning and Development and a three-day supervisory workshop.
Mentorship and coaching
Monthly one-to-one coaching with industry specialists, plus guided reflection journals and mentor check-ins.
Benchmarking and personal plans
Shadowmatch® and Skillsgrid® assessments to map behavioural habits and competencies, followed by individual development plans.
Outcome-based assessment
Assignments, workplace projects and a final portfolio presentation to an industry panel. A 70% threshold across technical, soft skills and professionalism is required for a Certificate of Competence.
Concept proposal
The Mine Mentor Training Facility
This facility is proposed, not built. The concept is a purpose-built mining education and research site — developed by converting an existing farm — with practical training environments, underground mock mines, research facilities, accommodation, leadership development space and digital mining laboratories.
The intention is not to replace universities, mining companies or existing training providers, but to be the practical bridge between them: structured development from a student’s first year through to graduation, aligned to the university curriculum and complementing industry vacation work.
The longer-term objective is a national benchmark for graduate readiness, and a place where universities, mining companies, OEMs, government departments and researchers work on the same problem in the same building.
The full concept proposal is available on request.
Mine Mentor online
The programme has its own home at minementor.online, where students and graduates engage with the pipeline directly. Comodex builds and runs it.
Tell us the problem. We will design the programme.
Every Comodex engagement starts with an exploratory conversation — no cost, no obligation. We look at your risks, your levels and your operating reality, then propose the programme that fits.
